I had my first experience of riding on a motorcycle when I was about 2 years old when, after competing in a local trial, my brother sat me on the tank of his Fantic 80 trials bike and took me for a ride. When I was three I had my own bike – a Yamaha PW50. My brother Ryan who is eight years older than me started doing competitive trials riding the year I was born and almost every Sunday we would be going somewhere to a trial, locally and nationally, and at some local club events I could take my PW.

In the summer of 93 I moved on to a Yamaha TY80. And in 1994, after my sixth birthday, followed my brother and started to compete in local and national championship motorcycle trials. That year I was the youngest rider ever to compete in the Scarborough Youth 2 Day International and finished in 11 thplace in Youth D class, from 18 riders.

For the next six years this is what I did on a Sunday, then in 2001 a change beckoned. The Foot and Mouth epidemic had a big impact on trials and from February of that year all trials were postponed. We went to a Peterborough Panthers meeting at the Showground at Easter and I thought I would like to have a go at that, and although trials were allowed later in the year I had my sights on something else. I was booked in for an Olly Nygren session at King’s Lynn and loved it. I then went to Sheffield training track using their bike and that was a disaster, the bike wasn’t very good and neither was I.

We decided that if I was going to have a chance I needed my own bike. We heard of one for sale in our area and bought it, that was in September. I joined the Amateur Broadsiders Club and went to their meetings at King’s Lynn and also went regularly to the training track at Sheffield. In 2002 it was ABC and training track again and also practice at Peterborough and a few outings at Craven Park.

In 2003 I would be 15 and wondered if I would get the chance to be in a team. Fortunately Ian Barney selected me for the Peterborough Pumas team (thank you Ian) and I made my debut three days after my fifteenth birthday at the Showground against Wimbledon, and scored 7 + 1 from 5 rides. It was to be a fantastic year with Louis Carr also asking me to ride for U16 Lions in challenge matches against Germany. I could only do the meeting at King’s Lynn and unfortunately it was abandoned after an accident due to time curfew, but from my two rides I scored 5 points. I also took part in a second half event at Craven Park riding for Scunthorpe, and we went on to win the East Riding Cup.

I have won numerous trophys with local motorcycle clubs – Lincoln, Grantham, Peterborough, the YMSA and at National level and hope to continue my trophy winning ways in speedway too.
